Google’s AI Overview giving wrong answers, users report
Google AI Overview, the latest invention to help users get a summary of their search result, is giving wrong information, users say.
In a post on 11 December, a user shared a screenshot indicating that the AI overviews are drawn from wrong sources with wrong information.
An issue with AI
Google AI Overview is a feature recently added to Google search to enhance user experience. It gives a brief summary of the entire search outcome, drawing from various sources and providing links to them.
While the feature was created to improve user experience and give users quick answers without them having to open links, users have reported that the information the overview gives is mostly inaccurate or outright false.
For example in the post, the user searched for ‘sep ira contribution deadline for 2024’, to which the overview said the deadline was in April 2024, as against the correct date, April 2025. In another unrelated incident, a user wrote on X:
“Google’s AI-generated answers in search results are so bad. There is no “Bluey” movie. I know Google is desperate to compete with other companies but it’s not ready. I’ve seen more misleading and incorrect information in Google’s “AI Overview” than I ever thought I would.”
Other users have reported similar incidents on X, adding that the summary misses even the smallest facts, which has become disturbing.
Google’s efforts
Google has made significant efforts to harness AI for improved user experience, but it may just not be working properly yet and there’s room for improvement.
Apart from AI Overview, the company has also rolled out Vids, an AI assistant for creating video content. Other key Google services such as Google Shopping have also received major boosts with AI updates.
