‘Siri’ in a browser? Opera’s latest browser can now control your smart home

Web browser company Opera has released its latest browser, Opera GX Smart Home which can be used to control smart homes.

The company revealed on 11 September that the browser can now communicate with all  connected devices in a smart home, making it an active, responsive part of the home setup.

‘Siri’ in a browser

Like the AI assistant for Apple devices known as Siri, Opera GX can be used not just to do things in the home but also interacts with smart devices to control what the browser does.

For example, users can set up a door sensor to instantly trigger the Panic Button when someone suddenly opens the door, ensuring privacy for their browsing.

It also brings incredible immersion as the RGB lighting in the house can now perfectly sync with the Opera GX theme colors to give an exhilarating experience.

For movie lovers, the lights in the room go dim once they start to watch a movie on the internet, making it easier than ever to watch movies with ease.

The open source browser also enables users to set up a “Do not disturb” light to turn on automatically when their CPU usage hits 90%, among other things.

While the browser was built with the popular MQTT protocol which connects to hubs like Home Assistant, Node Red, and Homebridge, it is fully customizable, so that there’s no limit to what users can do with it.

To use the new feature, users have to download the latest version of Opera GX and connect to their home setup to start exploring.

Improving with tech

Opera is one of the oldest web browsers there are, and the team has been building relentlessly in recent times to offer users a better experience.

In February this year, the team released one of the most significant updates ever, allowing chat apps to show up on the browser’s side bar to allow for easy access. Opera GX Smart Home however has stolen the show.
