Google launches new operating system for headsets and glasses, Android XR

Google, in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm, has announced Android XR, a new operating system for headsets and glasses.

The announcement on 12 December stated that the new OS is a product of years of investment in AI, AR and VR to bring helpful experiences to headsets and glasses.

With support for ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR, Android XR serves as a preview that developers can easily use to start building apps and games for upcoming Android XR devices.

Opening the door to innovation

The launch of Android XR is opening the door to the creation of several XR devices. The partnership with Qualcomm opens the door for its partners like Lynx, Sony and XREAL to develop a wide array of Android XR devices to meet the diverse needs of people and businesses.

In addition, Google is also working with Magic Leap on XR technology and future products with AR and AI.

The OS will first launch on headsets with the first device code-named Project Moohan that will be available for purchase next year.

With headsets, users can enter a fully immersive virtual environment or stay present in the real world. They can fill the space around them with apps and content, and have conversations with Gemini about what they are seeing or control their devices.

It will also be possible to watch YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen, relive cherished memories with Google Photos in 3D, as well as explore the world in new ways with Google Maps.

In the future, Android XR will also support glasses for all-day help. Google will soon begin real-world testing of prototype glasses running Android XR with a small group of users to ensure the products respect the privacy of those around.

Advances in immersive technology

The launch of Android XR is Google’s biggest achievement in immersive technology so far. For its partner, Samsung, much has been achieved already.

The leading electronics company introduced generative wallpapers for AI TVs earlier this year to give users a tailored immersive entertainment experience.
