A man using Facebook on his laptop and phone
Facebook users complain of being spammed with explicit content. What is happening?
A number of Facebook users have taken to social media to complain of their pages being spammed with explicit content.
One of them complained in a Reddit post on 12 February, alleging that his page has been flooded with explicit content including bestiality videos spread by bots.
Other people say they have reported the same issue to Facebook but no action has been taken, suggesting the content does not violet their terms of service.
A messed up algorithm?
The Facebook algorithm is known to censor all kinds of content including those that seem completely harmless. It is therefore a big surprise that this is happening without any attempt to halt it.
Some have suggested that the algorithm may be messed up by the user clicking on things that are “suggestive”, but such content shouldn’t be found on pages that children view, such as craft pages as mentioned.
Some say that AI is to blame, as this kind of spams have been around since Facebook fired its staff to rely heavily on AI.
The suspicion is not out of place because AI has been disappointing to users of these technologies lately.
For example, Google’s AI Overview for search results has been less than satisfactory in the summaries it gives.
The technology has also been blamed for Google Maps leading users astray, sometimes risking their very lives in the process.
More allegations
There are more allegations about Facebook recently. Some older users of the platform have alleged that it is “recycling” their old accounts for younger users.
This may also have something to do with the AI technology the platform has adopted. However, it needs to look into these complaints because alternative platforms are waiting to take their users away if the issues continue to plague them.
