Google Maps has “jeopardized” the life of a user several times within the last six months as it keeps leading him astray.
The user stated in a Reddit post on 27 November that the latest incident involved the app leading him off the highway and into an unplowed service road to get stuck in snow.
This has changed his belief that “Google maps is the crown jewel of Google’s portfolio”, he stated in regret.
Multiple disappointments
The user reported several incidents where Google Maps led him off track. On several occasions, the navigation system tried to force him to pass his destination and then turn back to the destination by another route.
On another occasion, the navigation led him into thick snow “in the middle of nowhere”. The worst is that he couldn’t report the latest error because the app wouldn’t let him, he wrote.
“None of this even touches how I couldn’t report tonight’s error because the app malfunctioned once I reached my destination or how I had to restart my phone today because maps locked down my entire device and that’s all I could do to regain control of my phone.”
Interestingly, he has used Google Maps for over ten years, but the problems just started showing up this year.
In a similar scenario, recent reports say that Google Maps led three friends returning from a wedding off an unfinished bridge in India, leading to the death of all three.
Is AI to blame?
Google has been integrating AI into its services and products recently. With its suite of AI models known as Gemini, the company has enabled the use of AI in creating images, Shopping, etc.
It is therefore likely that it has also integrated AI into its Google Maps services, and users are suspecting that the errors with the app could be because AI is taking over the navigation.
