Breaking language barrier: YouTube brings content in native languages

YouTube has introduced a multi-language voice feature that allows fans to watch content in their local languages.

In a blog post on 10 September, the streaming giant said the new feature is geared at empowering creators to share their content with many more viewers.

The feature will be rolling out to millions of creators over the coming weeks, the company said.

How it works

Before now, creators needed to create content in a particular language to reach viewers who speak that language, but not anymore.

With the multi-language voice feature now available, creators can make videos in English and their viewers can choose to watch the video in their local languages.

YouTube started experimenting with this feature two years ago, allowing a few creators to add their own dubs in multiple languages.

At the time, the strategy saw creators increase their watch time by 25% in the video’s non-primary language.

But the company is doing even more.

“We’ve even begun piloting multi-language thumbnails with a select group of creators, giving them the opportunity to add localized thumbnails based off of viewers’ selected language.”

YouTube claims some of its top creators like MrBeast and Mark Rober now reach millions more viewers around the world, with Rober’s multi-language audio dubs averaging over 30 languages per video.

With the new feature, adding dubs isn’t necessary as viewers can see the content in their native languages within moments of going live.

Improving user experience

YouTube has been working on improving user experience with new ideas, and the multi-language feature is just the latest.

Earlier this year, the platform introduced AI search to help users navigate easier and find the content they seek without much hassle.

Hopefully, this new update will further improve user experience and bring more people onboard from different parts of the world.
