Video streaming platform YouTube has rolled out a new AI search feature to help users quickly find what they are looking for.
In a blog post on 26 June, the platform said it is bringing two new AI features, one of which is the AI search for specific search focuses.
How it works
The new feature has a new AI-powered search results carousel to suggest videos and topic descriptions by creators across YouTube.
When users search for a particular phrase, say “best beaches in Hawaii”, they will see an AI-generated carousel.
This Carousel highlights clips from videos that show the best snorkel spots and volcanic beaches, as well as complete descriptions and more videos to plan their ideal day.
However, the feature is only available to premium users in the U.S. for searches related to shopping, travel, or things to do in a specific place for now.
YouTube is also testing conversational AI with more users. The feature will be available to some non-Premium users in the US following positive feedback from premium users.
The platform intends to roll out more AI features to help users maximize the use of their time while using it.
AI’s good and bad
AI has become a widely used technology in several sectors, including health, technology, science, etc. The positive results from the use in these sectors are glaring for all to see.
However, there is also the negative side of the technology which cannot be ignored. For example, recently, fake bands flooded YouTube and its rival Spotify with AI-generated songs.
As AI content is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from organic and original content, YouTube needs to pay attention to the trend to ensure that it leverages the good side of AI while curbing its abuse in content.
