Zuckerberg blames Wi‑Fi for flop of Meta’s AI glasses demo on stage
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has attributed the failure of the company’s newest AI glasses during a live demo on stage to bad WiFi.
During a live demo of the new Ray Ban glasses at Meta Connect 2025 on 17 September, the glasses reportedly glitched during the test of all its new capabilities, causing Zuckerberg to walk off the stage disappointed.
The unveiling of new tech
Meta unveiled three pairs of smart glasses at the event, the first being the latest generation Meta Ray-Ban, which Zuckerberg said now has double the battery life and 3k video recording.
While the demo of one of the glasses features — Conversation Focus — went well, things changed quickly when Zuckerberg switched to a live demo of a new Live AI feature.
It wasn’t much of a surprise though, because he mentioned the feature was “not there yet” because it couldn’t run all the time.
The most glaring flop was when he asked a chef to use the glasses to make a Korean steak sauce with the ingredients available on the table.
The chef asked the device to create the condiment for the menu, but it went on describing what is generally in the recipe, leaving the chef confused and asking “What do i do first?”.
Another flop was witnessed during the live demo of another pair of glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban Display.
It features new technologies, including a high-resolution display on the right lens and a wristband called the Meta Neural Band which interacts with the glasses.
The demo went wrong when one of the team members put across a video call to Zuckerberg on stage four times but he could not answer. After the fifth time, he said “I don’t know what to tell you guys.”
Another unveiling was the new Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses which didn’t require a demo. Designed for athletes, Zuckerberg said one can use it to run two marathons without the battery running out.
Because they are water-resistant, they can also be used for surfing and other water-related activities.
Despite the flops, the devices have received lots of positive reviews although they are quite expensive, reaching up to the price of a Pixel 10.
