Zcash holders just delivered a near-unanimous verdict on the network’s future.
Nearly 2.4 million ZEC took part in a privacy-preserving vote on the NU7 upgrade. The results came back overwhelmingly one-sided, and price reacted fast.
What Holders Approved
About 99.9% of participating ZEC backed cutting the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. That change would cut the average wait for a first confirmation by roughly a factor of three.
Holders also delivered a clear message on monetary policy: 98.9% voted to keep Zcash’s existing Bitcoin-style halving schedule rather than switch to smoother issuance.
Another 96.6% chose to delay reissuance under the Network Sustainability Mechanism until February 2031, and 99.3% backed shipping NU7 as soon as possible, even if that means dropping features not ready by a September 30 deadline.
Roughly 2.4 million of the 3.6 million eligible ZEC took part, about two-thirds of the eligible supply.
The Backdrop That Made This Vote Possible
Eligibility for this vote depended on holding shielded ZEC in the Ironwood pool.
That pool exists because developers rallied behind the Ironwood upgrade after a counterfeit-coin scare earlier this year, when a bug in Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool raised fears that unauthorized ZEC could have been minted.
Ironwood gave the network a clean shielded pool with verifiable supply controls, which later became the basis for this vote’s ballot eligibility.
Price Has Already Run Far Ahead
ZEC trades at $1,364.82 as of 07:42 UTC on September 17, 2026, up a whopping 169.6% over 30 days, per CoinGecko.

The chart shows a steady climb from under $600 in late August to above $1,200 by mid-September, with a fresh push past $1,360 following the vote results.
Zcash has repeatedly outperformed the broader market this year, including a stretch in May when ZEC climbed more than 14% alongside Hyperliquid’s own rally, a pattern that’s shown up again around this governance milestone.
What Comes Next
The vote itself doesn’t activate anything yet. Developers still need to code and test NU7 before the 25-second blocks go live, with the September 30 deadline shaping which features make the final cut.
With governance settled and price already up nearly 170% on the month, the next real test for ZEC will be whether the network can ship NU7 on schedule without a repeat of the security issues that shaped this vote’s eligibility rules in the first place.
