Amid the automotive industry’s continuous push toward electric vehicles (EVs), popular Chinese technology brand Xiaomi has just launched its first electric SUV – and it’s already captured attention thanks to its qualities in terms of range, speed, and appearance.
Notably, the Xiaomi YU7 has officially gone on sale in China alongside the SU7 sedan. Specifically, the brand’s first SUV in the line-up features an 800-volt electrical platform, V6s Plus electric motors, and comes in three variants, the company said on June 26.
Specifically, the YU7 Standard version is an ultra-long-range rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicle, the YU7 Pro an ultra-long-range all-wheel drive (AWD) performer, while the YU7 Max is an ultra-long-range high-performance AWD variant. As Xiaomi explained in the press release:
“Xiaomi YU7 is positioned as a high-performance luxury SUV that aims to redefine luxury through advanced design, technology, driving experience, and safety – creating an advanced SUV that defies the ordinary.”
Xiaomi’s first electric SUV specifications
Indeed, it begins to achieve this goal by carefully balancing a 3:1 wheelbase-to-body ratio extending the front end with a generous 659 mm impact absorption space, a 2.1:1 wheel-to-height ratio, and a 1.25:1 width-to-height ratio providing it with a distinctly sporty outline.
Then, there’s the 16.1-inch central infotainment touchscreen, a 1.1-meter ultra-wide display at the top of the layered Xiaomi HyperVision Panoramic Display dashboard consisting of a triple mini-LED screen array with critical driving information and five configurable sections.
Additionally, complementing these are the rear entertainment screens powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip running Xiaomi HyperOS, 14 speakers as standard, and an option to upgrade to a 25-speaker surround system, which is standard in the YU7 Max variant.
And that’s not all. Xiaomi throws in dual 80-watt wireless charging pads, three-zone climate control, eco-friendly upholstery, an optional refrigerator, electrically adjustable back seats, front-seat heating, ventilation, and memory functions, and an optional upgrade to zero gravity units with a massage function and leg rest.
An Nvidia Drive AGX Thor chip enables driver assistance, with 700 TOPS of computing power, linked to a single LiDAR, a 4D millimeter-wave radar, 11 external cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, and a sub-meter high-precision positioning system.
Speeds and charging
Meanwhile, the YU7 ranges up to 835 km or 518.85 miles (CLTC) and may reach a top speed of 240 km/h (149.13 mph), with the Pro version capable of 770 km (478.46 miles) range and same maximum speed, and the YU7 Max hitting up to 760 km (472.24 miles) range and 253 km/h (157.21 mph) speeds.
Furthermore, the battery in the Standard and Pro models is a 96.3kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) device, whereas the Max option features the 101.7 kWh nickel-manganese cobalt (NMC) one. Moreover, charging requires 21 minutes for the Standard and Pro, and only 12 minutes for the Max.
Originally a smartphone behemoth, Xiaomi has gradually and successfully branched out into various other consumer technologies, including household appliances, unmanned aerial vehicles, and EVs. Now, its first electric SUV promises to establish the brand in this particular area as well.
