Top automaker Hyundai has entered a strategic partnership with autonomous car maker Waymo, to widen the reach of autonomous driving technology.
According to a blog published by Hyundai on 7 October, the first phase of the multi-year partnership will start with Waymo integrating its autonomous driving technology into Hyundai’s all-electric IONIQ 5.
Accelerating autonomous driving technology
The partnership with Hyundai is a great opportunity for Waymo to bring its autonomous driving technology to more car owners and users. This is especially true because the IONIQ 5 is one of Hyundai’s biggest breakthroughs in car manufacture.
CEO of Waymo, Tekedra Mawakana, commenting on the partnership said:
“We are thrilled to partner with Hyundai as we further our mission to be the world’s most trusted driver, Hyundai’s focus on sustainability and strong electric vehicle roadmap makes them a great partner for us as we bring our fully autonomous service to more riders in more places.”
The vehicles to be integrated with Waymo’s autonomous technology will be assembled in the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) EV manufacturing facility in Georgia, after which they will join the Waymo fleet.
For the next few years, a significant number of ONIQ 5s equipped with Waymo’s technology will be produced to support Waymo One’s growing scale.
The initial on-road testing of the vehicles will commence by late 2025, and they will be available to Waymo One riders in the years to follow.
Hyundai’s adventure into technology
Hyundai’s partnership with Waymo is evidence that the company is delving into technology a little more. Integrating autonomous driving into its first all electric vehicle is a major step towards advancing in technology, but it isn’t only about cars.
Just this month, the company released a “10M March” video showing wearable rehabilitation robots in assisting injured soldiers to recover their movements.
The equipment developed by the company’s AI lab helps muscle recovery, joint movement, and complex motion beyond basic walking assistance.
