With most vehicle manufacturers launching new car models and implementing innovative technologies towards improving speed, range, and electric charging times, Volkswagen has decided to bring something totally different – an AirConsole for some game time.
Indeed, VW Commercial Vehicles has introduced the AirConsole In-Car App for the current versions of the ID. Buzz, Caddy, Multivan, California, and Crafter, with an aim to expand its infotainment system into a games console, according to the company’s press release published on July 1.
Specifically, through a partnership with N-Dream, vehicle occupants can now play single or multiplayer games during charging breaks or other wait times, using their smartphones as the controllers – a major upgrade to the existing range of onboard games permanently installed on cars’ infotainment system.
As it happens, the app is available for direct download and installation in the vehicle via VW’s In-Car Shop, and occupants can use it via an internet connection in the parked vehicle, just like they would at home, with a console and gamepads.
Turn breaks into game time with PAC-MAN
For the time being, you can download 15 games and play them – free of charge (as long as you have an active VW Connect Plus contract). Among them is the classic PAC-MAN Championship Edition, accessible in the ID. Buzz (starting with ID. Software 4.0), as well as for the Caddy, Multivan, California, and Crafter from model year 2025 in many European countries.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s famous Polo model has recently turned 50, and the popular automotive behemoth has marked the occasion by unveiling a nostalgia-packed yet modern Polo Edition 50 hatchback with a sleek, celebratory package.
Elsewhere, in another mash-up between the automotive industry and the gaming world, the Nissan Formula E team has launched its first video game called ‘NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo,’ a retro-inspired arcade game created in collaboration with Japanese illustrator Kentaro Yoshida.
