OpenAI is set to expand the reach of its chatbot ChatGPT with new capabilities and features in the coming months, including adult content.
CEO of the company Sam Altman in a long tweet on 14 October informed the public that they intend to roll out more “age-gating “ features in December in a bid to “treat adult users like adults.”
As a precaution, the feature will only be available to verified adults, which some have interpreted to mean that more privacy-revealing data is required.

Altman in his long message said ChatGPT has been quite restrictive to ensure mental health issues are addressed, at the cost of making the chatbot less enjoyable for users with no mental health issues.
Having mitigated the issue, the company now wants to “safely relax the restrictions” in most cases, including bringing adult content to the chatbot.
The plan is to release a new version of ChatGPT that can “respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend” if the user wants it to.
“In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”
Some ChatGPT users have expressed reservations with the upcoming release, saying OpenAI just wants to collect more information from users for surveillance purposes.
A Reddit user wrote:
“I understand why people would use it instead of a product like lumo, but Jesus Christ handing over an ID for this is just a line way too far. Even for the people who are “I DoNt CaRe aBoUt pRiVaCy” should be terrified of something like this. And those that hand over their ID have no idea what they’re in for…do not hand over your ID for this.”
ChatGPT rival Grok has already released a similar feature known as Grok Companion which features a flirtatious anime-style character called Ani.
