Toyota today announced the development of a new fuel cell (FC) system for commercial and heavy duty vehicles.
According to a press release on 14 February, the all-new 3rd Gen FC System is designed to meet the particular needs of commercial and heavy duty vehicles with the same durability as conventional diesel-powered engines.
The FC System will be unveiled for the first time on Wednesday, February 19 at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo, Japan.
Pushing towards a hydrogen society
The company said developing this new FC system is a major step towards the realization of a hydrogen society.
This is in line with its belief that hydrogen is an important fuel in pursuit of carbon neutrality, and is actively collaborating with partners across various industries.
It is a system with significant improvements in performance, fuel efficiency and a reduction in costs compared to the prior version.
Over the years, the company has been providing fuel cell systems for use in the commercial sectors, and the new 3rd Gen fuel system was developed based on customer feedback over several years.
Toyota plans to introduce the new system in markets mainly in Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026 at the earliest.
Previous efforts towards carbon neutrality
Toyota has worked hard to incorporate electric and hydrogen vehicles in its models to fast-track the transition to carbon neutrality.
Recently, the company opened its first in-house automotive battery factory outside of Japan.
The new factory in North Carolina will produce batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Similarly, the company partnered with Suzuki and Daihatsu to jointly build commercial BEVs that share the characteristics of all three brands but bear their separate logos.
