Toyota has recalled roughly 8,000 of some 2023 and 2024 Corolla vehicles due to steering shaft problems.
The top automaker made an official announcement of the recall on 21 November, stating that car owners affected by the fault should return the vehicles and have the intermediate steering shafts replaced at no cost.
The affected vehicles are among those manufactured between July 2023 and September 2024, the announcement said.
The problem
Toyota said some of the vehicles manufactured during the stated time range may have been manufactured with cracks in the steering shafts.
The company said that the crack could grow, causing part of the steering shaft to break, leading to a loss of control and increasing the risk of an accident.
Already, Toyota dealers are set to receive the affected vehicles, and customers will be notified about the issue through email by late January 2025.
To check if a vehicle is affected, customers can visit Toyota website or NHSTA website and enter their vehicle’s VIN or license plate to verify.
Other recalls
Recalls are quite common, with several automakers recalling certain models every now and then. For example in October, Honda recalled 800,000 of its latest vehicles due to fire risk associated with the fuel pump.
The recall affected various Accord, CR-V Hybrid and Honda Civic vehicles from 2023 through 2025, 720,000 of which were in the United States and about 61,000 in Canada.
In the same month, Ford recalled about 40,000 vehicles due to software issues that affected the windows on the driver’s side.
The issue affected the automatic window reversal feature, causing the glass to keep rising and crush any obstacle in its way, which could be a fatal.
Like Toyota, both Honda and Ford offered to fix the affected models for free. Customers only had to go to authorized dealers to get their cars fixed.
