A TikTok user, www.optimum.college has received a 10-year suspension for posting about a class action lawsuit it filed against the U.S. government for banning TikTok.
The user posted about the ban in the TikTok Reddit community on 28 January, lamenting the unexpected ban action taken by the embattled social platform.
What happened?
www.optimum.college had earlier filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, seeking compensation for all 170 million U.S. TikTok users for taking their livelihoods through the ban.
Screenshots of the lawsuit signed by the groupâs leader Garett Lee Leby and âU.S. users of TikTokâ were later posted in a slideshow on their TikTok handle, which got the attention of the TikTok management.
Apparently, Leby didnât expect that the platform which has gone through so much with the U.S. government would suspend his community for filing a lawsuit that seems to be on its side.
Against his expectation though, TikTok placed a 10-year ban on the handle for the post. While the ban does not hinder him from accessing the account, his orders will not be delivered until 26 January 2035.
There is however an option to file for an appeal, and if he can defend his actions then the account will be restored.
Surprising action from TikTok
TikTok has faced several legal challenges with the U.S. government over the years. The Biden administration even succeeded in placing a ban on the social platform on allegations of links with the Chinese Communist Party.
Fortunately, the new Trump government reversed the ban, giving TikTok an extension of at least 75 days for an agreement to be reached.
Some Redditors said the platform is trying to protect its relationship with the government, hence the ban which does not make logical sense as www.optimum.college was defending exactly what TikTok has been saying.Â
