Redditors have reacted to Amazon’s plans to use humanoid robots for deliveries, some making fun of the idea.
Responding to a June 5 post on the subject, the Redditors said such robots can be stolen or abused in other ways such as the case with Chappie, a police robot that was stolen and reprogrammed in a 2015 movie with the same title.
Amazon’s ambition
Retail giant Amazon recently revealed plans to use humanoid robots for home deliveries. The company in a tweet confirmed that it is building foundation models to support the functioning of these robots.
While some followers applauded the idea in hope of better services, many others find it ridiculous or offensive that robots will take the jobs of thousands of humans.
One comment reads:
“Maybe then I’ll resume ordering fragile items. Currently your fulfillment center employees toss delicate items in plastic envelopes with no padding and they arrive broken and smashed. It’s been 3 years and I gave up ordering fragile items from Amazon. Maybe robots will be smarter.”
If successful, Amazon will be deploying thousands of robots to deliver packages to homes. Imagine autonomous vehicles pulling up in front of your house with a robot holding your package.
Experimenting with options
Meanwhile, the company has tried other methods of package delivery, one of which is the use of drones.
The use of drones was first tested in the UK early this year, but Amazon hasn’t given any more updates since.
One thing is clear though, Amazon is exploring ways of reducing the workforce and replacing it with machines as many other businesses are doing to reduce the cost of hiring humans who have to be paid.
