Tesla has revealed plans to roll out its ride-hailing app in Texas and California in 2025.
According to a 24 October tweet on X, the network is currently being tested by employees in the Bay Area, with a supervising driver onboard. The testing is coming ahead of the launch of a fully autonomous ride-hailing service next year.
Beyond expectation
Tesla is moving rather quickly towards the launch of this service. The company first unveiled the ride-hailing app in its Q1 2024 earnings report, and is already testing the service with Tesla employees which is faster than anticipated.
CEO Elon Musk stated during the recent Tesla Q3 2024 earnings call, that the vehicles in the fleet are equipped with Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. However, a safety driver is provided to take over in case of an emergency.
With the app, employees can hail rides, and Musk is optimistic that the FSD without a driver behind the wheel will be safer than a human driver by Q2 2025.
As to launching the app in Texas and California, the billionaire said the company awaits regulatory approval from the states to do so.
The pilot phase of the ride-hailing service with a safety driver has been running for over a year, and Tesla looks forward to moving on to the final phase of making it available for public use next year.
Expanding fast
Since the launch of Tesla in 2003, the company has grown rather rapidly, and is now working tirelessly to make autonomous cars a daily experience. However, its efforts don’t stop there.
The EV maker is also ensuring that charging of electric vehicles becomes easily accessible in every part of the world.
Just recently, it launched a new supercharger location in Japan. This brings the number of Tesla supercharger locations in the world to 60,000, which is a huge milestone.
