Scroll Completes OpenVM 2.0 Upgrade With New SWIRL Proof System

Ethereum’s roadmap leans toward zero-knowledge proofs to scale without sacrificing decentralization.

Scroll Completes OpenVM 2.0 Upgrade With New SWIRL Proof System

Scroll has completed a major upgrade to the proving system behind its zkEVM, moving from OpenVM v1.6.0 to OpenVM v2.0.0 and replacing the underlying proof system with SWIRL.

The upgrade was successfully executed on September 22, according to an official Scroll governance announcement.

Users and dApps did not need to migrate. The external protocol, EVM behavior, fee model and contract interfaces remained unchanged. The breaking changes occurred inside the zk proving stack.

A new verifier was required on Ethereum

Because OpenVM 2.0 changes both the proof system and the circuits that produce Scroll’s validity proofs, the network needed a new on-chain verifier contract.

The new stack uses SWIRL through STARK Backend v2.0.0 and introduces a new recursive verifier circuit, a continuation aggregation pipeline and a deferral framework.

The upgrade also incorporates three security fixes that were previously shipped in OpenVM v1.7.0. Those advisories covered issues in memory-root handling and Solidity verifier behavior, including cases where proof verification could potentially be bypassed or non-canonical commitments accepted.

The upgrade was invisible to most users by design

During the maintenance window, Scroll expected L1 batch finalization to pause for roughly an hour, while transactions, deposits and L2 execution continued.

That separation is one of the strengths of rollup architecture: the proving system can evolve significantly without forcing applications to rewrite their contracts or users to move assets.

At the same time, prover upgrades are security-critical. The verifier is ultimately what tells Ethereum that the state transition claimed by the rollup is valid.

Scroll’s move to a newer upstream proving system therefore matters even if the user experience did not visibly change. It is a deep infrastructure upgrade to the component responsible for proving that the chain executed correctly.
