Samsung has announced it will be the largest shareholder in Korean AI firm Rainbow Robotics to support the development of humanoid robots.
In a press release on 31 December, the electronics company said it plans to increase its stake in the Korean firm from 14.7% to 35%.
In addition, Rainbow Robotics will also be incorporated as a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics’ consolidated financial statements.
Exploring robotics
Samsung has used artificial intelligence in several of its products. It earlier this year introduced generative wallpapers for its AI TVs.
However with the collaboration with Rainbow Robotics, the company intends to further strengthen its foundation in the development of advanced robot technology.
The collaboration will harness Samsung Electronics’ AI and software technology and Rainbow Robotics’ technology to accelerate the development of intelligent advanced humanoids, which will be used mainly for manufacturing and logistics automation tasks.
“These robots can greatly improve their work capabilities by learning and analyzing situational data and environmental variables that occur in the field through AI algorithms. Rainbow Robotics is expected to actively enter overseas markets by utilizing Samsung’s global sales infrastructure.”
Samsung and Rainbow Robotics will also form a synergy council that will strengthen leadership in the global advanced robotics industry.
The council will also support both companies by developing future robot technologies and core business strategies, as well as identifying and assessing market demand.
The shift to humanoid robots
Samsung has come a long way in the adoption of AI to improve its products. Apart from the AI TVs it produces, it is also set to unveil the first air to water pump for the North American market at the CES 2025 and now it is going into humanoid robots.
Nvidia, a top chipmaker and AI developer has also ventured into humanoid robots as it announced it will launch compact computers built mainly to support humanoid robots in 2025.
