With Jagex’s newest announcement, RuneScape universe dwellers have something to look forward to this spring – a co-op open-world game RuneScape: Dragonwilds, in which they can rise from noob to dragon-slaying hero by themselves or with up to three friends.
Indeed, the developers have shared the exciting RuneScape: Dragonwilds news alongside the official world teaser trailer and a Q&A video with Mod Dutch, Executive Producer of the game, and asking the players to “save the date for April 15th at 5PM BST for our first Livestream,” on March 31.
What happens in RuneScape Dragonwilds?
Specifically, Mod Dutch explained that Jagex is releasing RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Steam to Early Access “quite soon.” In his words, the action takes place on the “long-lost continent of Ashenfall, and there, something troubling is brewing.” As he set the stage further, but without revealing too much:
“An ancient clutch of dragons led by a fierce Dragon Queen have decided to stir up trouble and Gielinor is under threat if they are not stopped. So, the players are sent North on an expedition, but then disaster strikes and they are amongst a few of the only ones who can actually reach the shores of that mysterious land.”
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a standalone, open-world survival craft game and not an MMO, but it’s got RuneScape skills, well-known NPCs, monsters, quests, lores, as well as “base building, gear crafting, and, of course, dragons.”
As a reminder, Jagex put out a call for Alpha testers in September 2024 and has since carried out intensive testing with the community, making the decision to launch into Early Access in spring 2025. The team has urged the players to Wishlist the game on the platform and asked them to join the deep-dive dev livestream on April 15.
Meanwhile, the exclusive IGN official trailer has provided a sneak peek into the upcoming all-new game powered by Unreal Engine 5, where players can gather resources, build shelters, unlock powerful spells, and craft weapons to survive and uncover ancient secrets in the quest to slay the Dragon Queen and reclaim Ashenfall.
That said, there has been no mention of platforms other than PC (like Xbox or PlayStation, for instance) in any of the press materials surrounding RuneScape: Dragonwilds, but the folks at IGN have hinted at a “wider release (including console)” is expected in 2026.
