AI Content Flood Forces a Policy Shift
As it happens, Cornell University’s arXiv repository plays a central role in global research, particularly in fast-moving fields like AI and machine learning, acting as the launchpad for countless breakthroughs, often publishing cutting-edge findings before they appear in peer-reviewed journals.
However, according to moderators, it has recently also become a dumping ground for a wave of AI-enabled low-value reports, surveys, and rewritten summaries, many of which do not contain meaningful research or new findings, straining moderation pipelines and crowding out legitimate work.
From now on, only computer science review/position papers that have already passed peer review will enter into consideration. The platform noted this is not a new rule, but that its enforcement is now strict, according to arXiv’s anúncio from October 31.
Notably, the shift follows a broader crisis in scientific (and other types of) publishing as AI tools accelerate content production, making it difficult to distinguish genuine contributions from auto-generated filler. Last year, a peer-reviewed journal retracted a paper after readers noticed an AI-generated image of a giant rat penis – a surreal but also real example of automation outpacing oversight.

Meanwhile, this change highlights a growing tension in research culture, where AI is powerful, but science depends on novelty and rigor, not well-phrased summaries. So far, the ban applies only to computer science, the field hit hardest by AI spam. However, arXiv warns that other research categories could follow if similar patterns emerge.
