A recent X poll by Windows shows that most people don’t update their passwords as regularly as they should.
According to the poll, over 50% of the respondents don’t update passwords at all, unless when compelled to do so. The poll already had over 3,000 respondents at the time of this report.
Details of the poll
The result of the poll shows that 54% of respondents never change passwords, while 32% update only “once in a blue moon”. Another 8% said they do that every six months, and only a tiny 6% said they update every month.
In the comment section, some of the respondents also added that when they do change their passwords, it’s because they forgot their previous passwords and are trying to recover their accounts.
This clearly shows that most people either update their passwords too often or not often enough.
Experts believe that both those who update too often (every month) and those who update less often (six months or more) are at risk.
Reports have shown that it is ideal to change passwords once every 90 days, that is every three months.
This lack of awareness may be why there are many cases of hacks and other vices related to the security of internet and computer users in general.
How to be safe
To remain safe with passwords, it is wise to heed the advice of experts who give counsel based on numerous studies. This means changing your passwords every three months, but it doesn’t stop there.
You should also know how to create strong passwords. A strong password should contain a combination of letters, numbers, and special symbols.
The numbers should not be your birthday or any number relevant to you which is easy to guess, making it more difficult for bad actors to crack.
