Opera Browser Integrates Google’s Gemini – What’s New?

In Brief

  • • Opera has integrated Google’s Gemini model across its major browsers.
  • • The new AI side panel offers voice interaction as well as summaries, comparisons etc.
  • • The move positions Opera among a growing group of AI-enhanced browsers.

Popular web browser Opera has integrated Gemini to bring AI features to enhance users’ experience. The new AI capabilities will be available across its Opera One, Opera GX and Opera Neon browsers for all users.

Opera released the information in a blog post on 1 December saying that Opera Browser AI will be available to over 80 million users, giving them free access to the latest and most advanced AI benefits, building on the company’s existing partnership with Google.

Opera AI will exist as a side panel that users can access whenever they want. In connection with any webpage, group of webpages and even videos, the browser is able to give answers based on the browsing context such as easy research, content summaries and even comparisons between different tabs.

Gemini Brings New Features to Opera

Gemini is Google’s AI model that has been integrated in several services and products. The model is used across Google’s products and now even external companies like Apple are using it for their own products, announcing last month that it plans to use the model for Siri. Per Wetterdal, EVP Commercial at Opera speaking said:

“AI is reshaping how people interact with the web, and the browser is the natural entry point for those experiences. Through our partnership with Google, we are able to offer users the experiences they really want through native search and AI features, for free, directly in their Opera One and Opera GX browsers while our most advanced users of the agentic Opera Neon browser are already getting access to Gemini 3 Pro.”

The integration comes with voice input and output, and also analysis of multiple file types including image and video. Users are also at liberty to determine what context they can share with Opera AI and what they can keep from it, ensuring that user privacy is preserved.

Opera Joins the Trend of AI Browsers

Opera’s integration of Gemini brings it closer to being a full AI-powered browser more than ever, which is becoming fashionable. OpenAI just launched its own AI browser known as ChatGPT Atlas recently, although the browser has faced a lot of criticism as users say they don’t know what it’s for.

Hopefully, Opera AI supported by Gemini will not be so bad and would serve the users well with the new features. The browser was designed to continuously improve in its processing of queries powered by the new AI features.
