Leading chipmaker Nvidia is set to launch compact computers built specifically for humanoid robots in 2025.
According to reports on 30 December and as the companyās developer website shows, the company is working on launching the computers named Jetson Thor in the first half of 2025.
This move is a strategy that is intended to position Nvidia to leverage the growing popularity of AI for its own business growth.
Supporting robotics from behind
Several top tech companies such as Tesla are at the forefront of exploring AI for business, especially in the building of electric vehicles.
For Nvidia however, the plan is to stay out of the competition and provide background support for robotics instead.
The company intends to do this by building the computers for humanoid robots, thus supporting humanoid software, hardware, and robot manufacturers.
This move became necessary considering the emergence of generative AI models and their use in training robots.
The decision to power humanoid robots may also be a way to diversify, as tech giants who relied on Nvidia for AI models in the past are tending towards building their own customized models as predicted by this Microsoft study.
While the study revealed that the use of AI is on a rapid increase, it also projected that more businesses will be building their own customized AI models in 2025 rather than rely on the generic ones provided by companies like Nvidia.
Impact in gaming
Apart from being a leading chipmaker and AI company, Nvidia is also a top name in the gaming industry, mostly known for cloud gaming.
It recently released its official app for PC gamers to help them keep their laptops and PCs updated with the latest GeForce Game Ready and NVIDIA Studio drivers, as well as discover and install applications like GeForce NOW and NVIDIA Broadcast.Ā Ā
