With the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI), it has found its way into many pores of the automotive industry, where it not just increasingly runs the vehicles but also helps improve their safety for both the drivers and other traffic participants, with Mitsubishi Electric among the pioneers in this area.
As it happens, Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America (MEAA) has recently signed a Referral Agreement with Seeing Machines Limited to promote the technology company’s Guardian Generation 3 driver monitoring solution across the Americas, according to a press release on March 3.
Indeed, the strategic partnership follows Mitsubishi’s recent investment in Seeing Machines from December 2024. It also leverages MEAA’s extensive aftermarket distribution network and customer relationships in the transport and logistics industries.
Mitsubishi welcomes Guardian Generation 3
Specifically, Guardian Generation 3 is an AI-powered aftermarket driver monitoring system (DMS) designed to detect and mitigate signs of driver distraction and fatigue in commercial vehicles in real-time using advanced computer monitoring technology.
If it detects any such signs, the system alerts the driver locally through visible and audible warnings, as well as haptic feedback through a vibration unit installed under the seat. In critical situations, it goes further – capturing event-based footage and transmitting it to a live monitoring center.
There, trained analysts can intervene in a matter of seconds to contact fleet managers and/or designated personnel. As opposed to continuous monitoring of in-cab cameras, Guardian only records when it detects a critical event, addressing privacy concerns, while providing fleets with risk mitigation data.
Commenting on the partnership, Masahiro Kaji, the CEO and President of MEAA, said:
“Guardian Generation 3 is a game-changer in driver monitoring. By utilizing our well-established distribution network, we are excited to bring this solution to fleet operators across the Americas. We believe the more Guardian units there are on the roads, the safer they will be for everyone.”
Meanwhile, AI is already an established companion in many private cars, and automaking behemoth Hyundai has recently entered a strategic partnership with autonomous car maker Waymo to bring its autonomous technology to more car owners and users.
