AI image generating platform Midjourney plans to roll out videos soon, despite an ongoing plagiarism lawsuit against it by Disney.
In a tweet on 12 June, founder of Magnific AI Javi Lopez hinted at the videos rollout which he said is soon.
He added that the videos will have the incredible artistic aesthetic that MJ is famous for, and attached a few sample videos.
Incredible indeed
Javi shared stunning videos that were generated using the yet to be released Midjourney feature, which looked really impressive.
Categories of videos that can be generated include cartoons, animations with characters such as Bigfoot, Yoda of Star Wars, realistic videos, and even video games.
When released, this feature will greatly improve the experience on Midjourney, making it compete with generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Grok, and others.
Meanwhile, Disney and Universal Studios have sued the platform for what they described as “a bottomless pit of plagiarism.”
The case is a landmark copyright lawsuit, as it is the first time major Hollywood companies have entered the legal battle over generative AI. the filing said:
“Midjourney is the quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism. Piracy is piracy, and whether an infringing image or video is made with AI or another technology does not make it any less infringing,” the companies state in the complaint.
In the filing in the federal district court in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the two companies claim Midjourney pirated their libraries to generate and distribute “endless unauthorized copies” of their characters, such as Darth Vader from Star Wars and the Minions from Despicable Me.
Interestingly, some of these characters still feature in the sample videos shared by Javi, showing complete defiance of the lawsuit.
Midjourney CEO David Holz had in 2022 denied the plagiarism allegations, saying Midjourney is like a search engine that creates unique images based on information it gathers rather than outrightly copy them.
