Starting May this year, Skype will no longer be available as Microsoft is closing it down and replacing it with Teams.
In a tweet on 28 February, the official Skype handle said Skype users will be able to log into Teams with their Skype details and stay connected with all their contacts from Skype.
The access to Teams will also be free, even if the user was operating a paid Skype account before the shutdown.
A new move
Microsoft has been making new changes just like most tech companies recently, and shutting down Skype may be one of the necessary changes.
This isn’t surprising, because the app has not had the kind of attention that other apps like Teams have.
In fact, this announcement is the first on the Skype handle in a long time, suggesting inactivity both in terms of development and use.
However, some users of the platform believe it may be a mistake shutting down the platform. One of them commented on X saying:
“Another lost opportunity that Microsoft had in the early days of online calls and chats.”
Like him, there are many who believe Microsoft has missed several opportunities in the tech space by making wrong decisions.
One of such was the decision to stop the production of Windows phones due to concerns that the Android market had taken over.
Looking somewhere else
Also more recently, the company decided to start selling Xbox games on Android, which gamers also criticized.
According to the concerned gamers, selling Xbox which is traditionally known to be available only with consoles will expose the company to unnecessary competition.
With the closing of Skype, the company is probably closing the door to another potential business, but could be aiming for something bigger, such as artificial intelligence.
The company has some of the best supercomputers for AI, which were used in training OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT version.
