The Mexican government has announced plans to launch an emergency app to provide support for its citizens facing deportation in the U.S.
In a press release on 27 December, the Mexican Foreign Secretary, Juan RamĆ³n de la Fuente said the app will allow Mexicans to instantly alert their nearest consulate when facing immigration enforcement actions.
According to the press release, the move is in a bid to defend the human rights of Mexican citizens through its consular network in the United States in accordance with international law.
Trumpās new immigration rules
The new app is coming on the heels of Trumpās expected immigration rules which will involve the deportation of illegal immigrants.
During a presidential press conference on 27 December, Fuente said the Legal Assistance Program now includes 329 legal advisors and representatives with various specialties, and that each consulate has developed a local action plan with specific recommendations for Mexican citizens.
With the app, Mexican citizens facing imminent immigration enforcement actions can alert the nearest consulate starting January 2025.
“The President has also instructed us to focus on direct community engagement, which we have already begun. I have personally attended several open meetings where the key message is to tell our fellow citizens that they are not alone and will not be alone.”
Fuente assured Mexicans in America that deportation from the United States requires a court order, a final deportation order, or removal order, and the consular team will ensure that due process is followed in the case of any challenge.
He also noted that special attention will be given to Mexicans who wish to return to Mexico and those prone to deportation and their families. There are also efforts to strengthen strategic alliances with local authorities, mayors, council members, and state and federal legislators to ensure that Mexican communities are protected.
