Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that Meta social platforms will henceforth feature community notes instead of fact-checkers.
Zuckerberg made the announcement on 7 January in a video on Fox New, stating that the action is in a bid to ensure free speech on Metaās social platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
Following the footsteps of X
Zuckerberg in his speech said Meta platforms will be following in the footsteps of Elon Muskās social media platform, X in a bid to ensure freedom of expression.
Until now, Meta social media platforms had third-party fact-checkers who were responsible for āverifyingā information posted on the platforms. This hasnāt gone down well with users as the fact-checkers donāt seem to allow free expression.
This could be why X has grown popular rapidly since Musk took over its ownership and introduced community notes.
The platform has become the most popular news source for millions of users even above mainstream media because of the trustworthiness as a result of community notes.
Community notes is a feature that gives perspective to information posted on the platform, and also debunks information that may be misleading.
Unlike fact-checkers, community notes are written by users of the platform, and so are regarded as more trustworthy than the perspectives of a third-party.
The change will begin in the U.S. according to Zuckerberg and will be gradually available to other users in the future.
Bringing free speech
Indeed, Meta embracing community notes and ditching fact-checkers is a commendable step towards restoring free speech and freedom of expression to its platforms.
With the implementation, Facebook and Instagram may soon become as popular as X as people seem to value their freedom of speech in this day and time.
