- Meta has introduced a tool that detects and alerts Facebook creators of reuse of their reels.
- The rollout aims to curb unauthorized content use across Facebook and Instagram.
- The new content protection lets creators decide what to do when they are alerted.
Meta has launched an automatic tool to prevent unauthorized reuse of Facebook reels. The tool alerts users when their original reels are being reused without permission to ensure that content protection is enforced on the platform.
Meta announced the new tool on Facebook’s creators platform, informing creators of an option to protect their content from illegal reuse.
The tool can detect reuse of original Facebook reels on Facebook and Instagram, two of Meta’s platforms that support reels.
Meta Puts Content Protection at Users’ Fingertips
Before now, anyone could download and reuse Facebook reels without any prior permission. Meta is changing that by putting control in the hands of users.
With the content control monitor right on the professional dashboard on the Facebook app, users can protect their content as part of the company’s effort to help genuine creators succeed.
Creators can enrol for content protection and have every of their future reels as well as eligible previous ones are protected. They can however decide who uses their reels by adding them to an “allow list”.
Content protection regularly scans Facebook and Instagram for any content resembling those of protected users. If detected, the tool alerts the creator to take appropriate steps if they wish. Alerted users can then track, block, or release the reels as they wish.
A timely Response from Meta
There are many things wrong with social media, one of which is the indiscriminate use of other people’s content without permission.
Though the company recently faced backlash for ending Messenger support on desktop, this is a timely intervention to protect creators on Facebook.
This will go a long way in ensuring that the right creators make it while those involved in piracy are punished to encourage creativity.
