LG Display, LG’s manufacturer and supplier of display technologies, including TFT-LCD panels, OLEDs, and flexible screens, has just begun mass production of its ultra-large automotive display solutions in an effort to push into the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) era.
As it happens, the company said it had officially started the production of the industry’s first 40-inch Pillar to Pillar (P2P) premium automotive displays, as part of its mission to revolutionize the driving experience, according to LG Display’s press release on February 24.
LG Display’s 40-inch P2P screen technical specifications
Specifically, a P2P display is an ultra-large automotive panel that fully covers the area in front of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats and provides a personalized infotainment experience for both. This includes a digital dashboard, navigation, A/C control, movies, music, games, and more – all without screen transitions.
As such, the giant display facilitates direct access to information and easy control of vehicle functions without any limitations. This represents an improvement of the previous displays where navigation instructions would disappear or shrink when accessing other functions, say music or A/C.
If you think a giant display would be distracting, the folks at LG have considered it as a possibility too.
Hence, their other implementations include Switchable Privacy Mode (SPM) viewing angle control tech. This key safety feature helps the driver stay focused on the road, obscuring the view of movies or games accessed by the front passenger – all while achieving (and maintaining) ultra-high-definition resolution.
On top of that, the innovators have for the first time applied local dimming technology. The goal is to reduce heat generation and power consumption to increase the driving efficiency of next-generation mobility options, including electric vehicles (EVs). Of course, physical buttons are still there, only minimized.
The pioneer vehicle to get LG’s 40-inch P2P will be the Afeela, the first sedan from Japanese joint venture Sony Honda Mobility and a next-generation EV. It combines Sony’s cutting-edge IT and entertainment technologies with Honda’s expertise in the field of vehicle manufacturing.
LG’s automotive innovations
Commenting on the new tech, LG Display’s Head of Auto Business Group, Keuk-sang Kwon, explained:
“Based on our industry-leading proprietary technology, outstanding product competitiveness, and stable supply capabilities, we will continue to present innovative solutions that provide differentiated customer value in the SDV era.”
Meanwhile, LG Display is far from being the only LG-affiliated company revolutionizing how we experience cars. As Techgaged.com reported on February 19, electronic component manufacturer LG Innotek has recently presented its new automotive lighting tech that allows users to display messages on their vehicles.
