Did you know that you can now access Google’s Gemini generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot without actually having a Google account? Well, you can (albeit with some limitations), and it’s a rather straightforward process.
Indeed, right until now, the Gemini app required that you sign in with your Google Account to access it. However, with the newest update from the technology behemoth, you no longer have to log in, at least for the web version of the service – through the Google Gemini website.
Having said that, it’s a flash model (Gemini 2.0 Flash) only, so there’s no support for file upload, image generation, or chat history without logging in, which means the definitive loss of the conversation in progress if you close the browser tab, but it’s a big deal for privacy nonetheless.
Using Gemini without Google
To gain entry to Gemini AI without a Google account or Gemini 2.0 Flash, there are a few simple steps to follow.
1) Open your web browser in incognito mode (we specifically used Brave for this experiment, but any other browser will do).
2) Navigate to the Gemini AI website: https://gemini.google.com/.
3) You’ll notice that instead of asking you to sign in, the page will directly take you to the chat window, with the “Meet Gemini, your personal AI assistant” greeting instead of the usual “Hello, [name]” option for signed-in users.
4) Ask away!
Do note that you’ll have to sign in if you want to start saving your chats for later access, add attachments, or generate images. You can try, but you’ll encounter a prompt asking you to sign up each time. Also, the ability to use Gemini AI without a Google account is only possible on the web, not on Gemini apps on iPhone and Android.
Regardless, having the option to secretly ask Gemini for help without others finding out and simply closing the window once you’re done is great and quite handy for privacy-oriented users, particularly amid rampant security concerns and government hacking attempts.
