Honda has developed the world’s first Push Power Measurement System to help wheelchair athletes improve their performance.
According to an announcement by the company on 13 November, the new measurement system is Honda’s way of contributing to the advancement of wheelchair athletics.
It is also in line with the company’s policy of striving to make mobility available to customers worldwide as well as help them realize their dreams.
Decades of research and development
This announcement is the result of decades of underground research and development of racing wheelchairs, Honda says.
With the system, athletes’ performance can be assessed objectively by precisely quantifying and visualizing the power output of the athlete to propel the racing wheelchair.
The system is attached to the wheel of the racing wheelchair and can measure all information relevant to racing performance, such as the difference in the amount of power applied to the right and left wheels, acceleration and deceleration, and when the maximum speed is reached.
By expressing these factors numerically, objective analysis and judgments can be drawn on athletes’ performance, which was not possible before now.
So far, the push power measurement system has been tested to measure more than 30 athletes to date with positive feedback. It will be on public display at the 43rd Oita International Wheelchair Marathon to be held in Oita Prefecture, Japan, on November 17.
In the future, the system will be available for a wider range of athletes both within and outside of Japan, the announcement says.
Blazing the trail in tech
The push power measurement system is a remarkable breakthrough in tech innovation, but it isn’t the first for Honda. The company has been leading innovation for some time now.
Early this month, it launched the world’s first motorcycle with V3 engine and electrical compressor. With these first of its kind innovations, Honda is becoming a trailblazer in the technology industry worldwide.
