OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Search for free users, taking the competition against Google to a new level.
An announcement on 16 December shows that all free users will be able to access the feature from now on, allowing them to surf the net like they would with any search engine.
The feature is available to all registered users on the web, mobile, and desktop ChatGPT apps.
Challenging Google
Google has been the leading search engine for decades, even though other search engines such as Bing and Firefox existed.
Due to Googleās dominance, the U.S. government recently proposed that the company sell its browser, Google Chrome.
Even without selling the browser, it seems the days of dominance may be coming to an end with ChatGPT search rolling out to free users.
The AI chatbot is estimated to receive about 3.66 billion visits per month, which is for now only a small fraction of Googleās monthly users. However, ChatGPT is growing rather rapidly, with users saying it is their preferred source of information.Ā
This could potentially mean that Google may face tougher competition as the ChatGPT Search feature becomes more popular.
Google was reportedly worried about the feature when it first rolled out as users said it was easier to use. OpenAI says Search with Advanced Voice will be rolling out on ChatGPT over the next week, making the competition even fiercer.
Other new features
Apart from rolling out search to free users, ChatGPT now has other new features. Along with Search with Advanced Voice, ChatGPT now has maps as well for the mobile app.
This feature enables users to search for and chat about local restaurants and businesses with up-to-date information. Again, this feature may compete with Google Maps, another service that users have complained about.
