Google has introduced a short videos section in its search results for desktop following the addition for mobile devices.
A Reddit user posted the new feature on 28 November after noticing that there was a Short video in the response he got from a search he initiated on Chrome.
This new feature curates videos from YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, giving users a quick view of short clips from these platforms without having to visit the websites.
Improving search results
Google has been experimenting with short videos for search results for some time now. According to reports, the company started testing the feature early this year, and launched it on mobile devices in August while testing for desktop commenced in November.
Interestingly, the videos are aggregated from other sources such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, which raises the question – is the short video section really a threat to any of these platforms?
It is noteworthy that the feature is not available for every search result. For example, a search for “Donald Trump” would return the option for short videos, but a similar search for “Mark Zuckerberg” would not present the option.
From these results, it isn’t clear how Google determines which search comes with short videos, but the algorithm has probably been set to behave in a certain way. It is also odd that Google is adding new features to Chrome, despite the U.S. Government insisting that it sells the web browser.
Other improvements
Google has added a few improvements to Chrome this year, and the short videos feature is just the latest.
It earlier added an improvement to Chrome on iOS that allows users to add search keywords to Google Lens image search for more precise results.
There was also a general update in October, leading to the fixing of several vulnerabilities and a general improvement for the popular browser.
