General Motors (GM) says it intends to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the safety of workers in its facilities as well as production quality.
The company in a press release on 11 March said it has no intention of replacing its workforce with AI as is the case with other companies, but is only using AI to aid its workforce.
Taking a big leap
General Motors is one of the biggest automakers in the U.S. So far, it has made both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that have incorporated AI in some ways, but it hasn’t used AI in its production process.
Going forward, the company will use AI to supplement the efforts of its human workers to ensure better quality and higher efficiency.
Accordingly, the company will use digital twins to simulate a running production line before it’s constructed in order to optimize the planning process and allow faster scaling while saving money.
GM will also use a combination of AI and machine learning to quickly and accurately pinpoint potential leaks in battery packs, allowing for quick repairs and supporting the safety and quality of batteries.
Also by leveraging both robotics and a proprietary AI tool, workers can inspect welds and paint coats to identify irregularities and anomalies to continuously enhance the quality of vehicles. The press release said:
“AI is transforming GM manufacturing, and we’ve just scratched the surface of its potential. And it’s not about automating everything or building more vehicles faster – our winning formula is driven by a combination of flexible manufacturing, advanced technology, and a talented workforce.”
Putting people first
In several industries these days, companies are adopting the use of AI not just to improve quality, but to replace the workforce and cut spending, but this is not true with GM.
According to the company, its policy remains people-centric, and is only using AI and advanced software to help the team minimize ergonomic stressors, enable workplace safety, and enhance quality in their manufacturing plants.
