A Facebook user has cried out after Messenger locked him out and asked him to make another login attempt after 55 years.
In a Reddit post on 14 March, the Facebook user said the incident occurred after he made four wrong attempts at logging into his account.
An unusual penalty
It is a common practice for platforms that require the use of PINs to lock an account for some time after four or more wrong attempts.
However in this case, the time before the next attempt is unusually long. According to the screenshot shared, Messenger asked him to make another attempt after roughly 484,000 hours, which is about 55 years from now.
It is because of these kinds of occurrences that Meta has been accused of using AI to moderate its platforms without any human supervision.
Instagram users recently raised concerns that the platform could be using AI to edit messages sent in groups, because the messages carry the tag “edited by Meta AI”.
Similarly, Meta platforms have been suspending and censoring comments in a way that seems unusual and suspicious. This is further worsened by the company’s decision to create AI accounts that look like humans.
If this is the case, it could be that the same bots are moderating Messenger, because it is unlikely that this decision was taken by a human.
Too many concerns
Lots of irregularities have been reported on Meta platforms recently, ranging from inappropriate content to unreasonable bans and censorship.
While there are different solutions proffered by the platform users, it is up to the company to act to redeem the image of its platforms.
A similar thing has been observed with Google’s AI overview in search, but an employee said the company doesn’t care and no amount of complaints will change anything.
