Mars Had Rainforests – New Discovery Hints

by Ana Zirojević
December 5, 2025
in Research, Science
A lush, green valley filled with mist lies between rocky, reddish mountains under a hazy orange sky, with a large distant planet visible above the horizon.

Did Mars Once Have Rainforests? New Clues Say Yes

⚡ KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Perseverance found kaolinite on Mars, a clay formed by long-term heavy rainfall.
  • Its chemistry points to a warm, humid, rainforest-like ancient Martian climate.
  • The discovery boosts the possibility that early Mars was once habitable.

For years, scientists have suspected that Mars was once warmer, wetter, and more welcoming than the barren world we see today. Now, a new discovery from NASA’s Perseverance rover paints an even more dramatic picture of ancient Mars with heavy rainfall, humid air, and lasting tropical conditions.

Scattered across Jezero Crater, researchers noticed small pale flecks interrupting the planet’s deep red terrain. What seemed like minor discolorations turned out to be something extraordinary – white, aluminum-rich kaolinite clay.

This is a mineral that on Earth forms almost exclusively in places with intense, long-duration rainfall. It’s the kind of clay you would expect in rainforests, not on a frozen desert planet.

The findings come from a team led by Adrian Broz of Purdue University. Working alongside planetary scientist Briony Horgan, who is part of Perseverance’s mission leadership, the group compared the rover’s mineral readings with Earth analogs.

What they found suggests that Mars’ climate wasn’t just wet – it may have been tropically wet.

Mineral That Shouldn’t Exist on Mars

Kaolinite is incredibly difficult to produce without the right environmental recipe. It requires warm temperatures, abundant liquid water, and – most importantly – millions of years of heavy rain washing minerals out of rocks. That makes its presence on Mars baffling.

Horgan notes that such rocks are rare even across Mars’ ancient terrain:

“Elsewhere on Mars, rocks like these are probably some of the most important outcrops we’ve seen from orbit because they are just so hard to form. You need so much water that we think this could be evidence of an ancient warmer and wetter climate where there was rain falling for millions of years.”

The discovery raises a second mystery. Notably, the clay fragments appear along Perseverance’s route with no clear nearby source. Some may have been washed into Jezero’s ancient lake by powerful rivers, while others might have been scattered by a large impact long ago.

Satellite imagery shows massive kaolinite outcrops elsewhere on the planet, but until a rover reaches them, these scattered rocks are the only close-up evidence available.

Broz and the team compared the Martian samples to kaolinite found in Southern California and South Africa. The match was striking. Both Earth and Mars samples show the typical chemical fingerprints of long-term rainfall, not the signatures of hydrothermal activity, which means this clay wasn’t formed by hot water, but by something far more Earth-like: tropical rain.

Climate Once Fit for Life?

This mineral could be a time capsule holding clues from billions of years ago. If Mars once had sustained rainfall, humid air, and stable bodies of water, the implications for habitability are profound. As Broz explained:

“All life uses water. So when we think about the possibility of these rocks on Mars representing a rainfall-driven environment, that is a really incredible, habitable place where life could have thrived if it were ever on Mars.”

These tiny white rocks, barely noticeable at first glance, are now reshaping how scientists think about the Red Planet. Instead of a cold desert from the start, Mars may once have been a lush, humid world – one with rivers, rainstorms, and the potential for life.

This video breaks down the Terra Luna collapse and how one of the largest failures in crypto history unfolded from a technical and structural perspective.

We explain how the UST–LUNA mechanism was designed, how the peg defense failed under pressure, and why liquidity dynamics, market incentives, and reflexive mint-burn mechanics triggered a death spiral that wiped out billions in days.

This is a clear, technical look at what went wrong, why it couldn’t be stopped once it started, and the key lessons the collapse left behind for crypto investors and builders.
