Crypto Fans Rejoice as Metamask Rolls Out Bitcoin Support
In Brief
- • MetaMask has added native Bitcoin support, enabling users to buy, hold, send, receive, and swap BTC.
- • The update expands MetaMask’s multichain strategy beyond Ethereum and Solana, and others.
- • The rollout has been met with strong community enthusiasm and could drive increased adoption.
A long-awaited change has just happened to Metamask, the wallet known for robust Ethereum support. It has just rolled out support for Bitcoin, allowing the buying, holding, and swapping of the coin with more perks.
Metamask announced on December 15th that users can now buy bitcoin using fiat currencies such as USD. Also, they can also send and receive BTC and at the same time swap tokens on Ethereum and Solana to BTC easily within the wallet.
As an incentive to encourage the use of the wallet, every swap of Ethereum or Solana tokens to BTC earns users extra Bitcoin. However, to see the Bitcoin support, users must update their Metamask to the latest version.
Metamask Brings Multichain Support
Metamask is one of the oldest and most trusted crypto wallets, especially for Ethereum and Solana tokens. It was initially created for Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible assets exclusively, but later expanded its coverage to include Solana tokens. More recently, it announced support for Monad, and Sei assets.
With the addition of Bitcoin, the wallet takes its multichain expansion to a new level. This opens the door for Bitcoin maximalists to also use the wallet going forward. Lack of support for Bitcoin has been a major limitation to the wallet and users have long desired this change to be made but for some reason it was delayed until now.
Bitcoin is however, not the last asset to be supported on the wallet. Metamask says more chains will be added, bringing many more tokens on the wallet for easy swapping with other tokens already on the platform.
Users Celebrate Bitcoin Support on Metamask
The news of Bitcoin support on Metamask has sparked celebration on X where the team shared the information on its official handle. Apparently, users have waited for this update for some time now, as they say it was late.
Others have also confessed that Bitcoin support is now a reason for them to migrate from other wallets to Metamask. This stands as a major step that was long overdue, and may have held it back from growing in both revenue and user base.
