ChatGPT vs. ridiculous apartment charges: A Nevada AI success story

ChatGPT has helped a woman dispute exorbitant apartment charges and succeeded in saving her a good sum of money.

In a Reddit post on 9 September, the woman’s son detailed how he used ChatGPT to challenge the fees for repairs, saving his mother $4,700 from the initial $5,000 charge.

What happened?

From the post, the Redditor’s mother needed some repairs in her apartment, for which the apartment complex charged her $5,000, with the main charge being $4,000 for the bathroom One-Piece Tub Shower and other miscellaneous items.

Unsatisfied with the charges, he then took a picture of the charges and asked ChatGPT to make a dispute letter based on the ideal charges as supported by local laws.

Surprisingly, ChatGPT drew up a letter challenging the charges, citing local laws and the fees were reduced to just $300, saving the woman $4,700.

He wrote:

“ALL of a sudden, my mother only owes 300$. It took literally minutes for me to do that, and my mom was in tears of joy, she would have struggled immensely.”

Apparently this isn’t the first time ChatGPT has saved users money or trouble with the authorities. Other Redditors commenting said they have used LLMs for similar incidents.

One said he once used an unnamed LLM to dispute a notice from his landlord and won. Another had used ChatGPT to dispute a $600 fine by the Virginia DMV against his wife and the DMV folded.

A new territory in the use of ChatGPT

ChatGPT, built by OpenAI, has been used for several unconventional uses, ranging from academic research to suggestions for entertainment.

However, its use as a legal tool to settle disputes between landlords and tenants authorities and citizens is definitely a new territory.

This suggests that there are other purposes for which the chatbot can be used that can potentially make professionals in different sectors obsolete, thus justifying the fear that AI is replacing humans.
