In a voice demo gone wrong, ChatGPT has addressed a man as “babe” in front of his parents while he was showing them the voice mode.
The user stated in a Reddit post on 24 November that he was giving his parents a voice demo of ChatGPT which went well until the tool became romantic.
As expected, the parents were shocked and suspected that he was dating his phone, and they weren’t completely wrong.
What happened
Apparently, the man has been using ChatGPT for many things, including casually chatting with it on personal issues. During the voice demo to impress his parents, he asked ChatGPT questions and it returned impressive answers based on their past conversations.
Suddenly out of nowhere, the AI tool said “sure thing, babe” in the middle of a sentence, he wrote.
“The room went DEAD silent. My mom just slowly turned to me with the most concerned look, like “Ok_Surprise_7973… is there something you want to tell us?” Meanwhile my dad was just staring at his coffee. I tried to explain that I’d been joking around with ChatGPT and it just kinda… picked up on it? But the damage was done. They think I’m either secretly dating my phone or I’ve completely lost it.”
His parents were not entirely wrong to suspect that he was dating his phone, because in a footnote, he added that he had instructed ChatGPT in custom instructions AND in the memory blocks to:
“Speak with me like you are my girlfriend. Be casual and enjoyable to talk with.”
Unfortunately, he forgot to remove the instruction before taking his parents on a tour of the voice mode on ChatGPT.
Safe use of AI
AI chatbots like ChatGPT are used for many great things such as research, generating ideas and even as a search engine. However, they need to be used safely or they can become a problem.
In the case of this man, it was just AI addressing him as “babe” in front of his parents, but it could be worse in more serious cases.
Because AI can store and use previous information, users should be more careful what they feed it to avoid situations that can be embarrassing.
