A top candidate contesting for the office of the Canadian Prime Minister has stated he wants Elon Musk to build a Tesla Gigafactory in Canada.
In a video shared on 9 January, candidate Pierre Poilievre said such an investment could bring jobs that would pay the Canadian people.
Looking to grow the economy
Following the resignation of former prime minister Justin Trudeau, Mr. Poilievre seems determined to grow the Canadian economy industrially if given the chance to become prime minister.
He added that he would ask Musk what it takes to attract such huge investment into the country and would do whatever it takes to bring in Tesla, one of the world’s biggest (if not the biggest) automotive companies.
“The fact is that it would be nice if we could convince Mr. Musk to open some of his factories here in Canada to create some jobs, some high paying jobs for our people…wouldn’t it be nice if we were producing more without corporate welfare, without corporate subsidies like the liberals favor? If we had more of that production here in Canada, I think that would be fantastic.”
A conservative politician, Poilievre has served as the Conservative Party of Canada’s leader and the Official Opposition’s leader since 2022. He has been a member of Parliament since 2004 and currently represents Carleton.
His call for a Tesla Gigafactory in Canada came in response to Musk’s endorsement of his candidature for the office of Prime Minister of Canada.
With such endorsement, it is likely that Canada may be the next Tesla destination should Poilievre win.
Musk rejected last year a similar call by a UK member of parliament to establish a Tesla factory in the country.
In response, the billionaire Tesla CEO wrote on X, “Very few companies will be willing to invest in the UK with the current administration,” referring to the current liberal government regime in the UK.
