German automaker BMW has announced plans to launch two exclusive variants of the BMW X3 in China later in February.
The company announced this in a press release on 14 February, stating that the vehicles are specifically tailored to the needs of the Chinese users and locally developed through its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA).
A car loved by China
The outgoing BMW X3 model was the strongest selling BMW vehicle worldwide in 2023, with 156,000 units sold in China alone.
This number accounts for roughly 40% of all BMW X model sales in the region, demonstrating how much the car is loved in the country.
It is on this premise that BMW initiated the design, development and building of these two variants tailored to their local needs.
Customers can choose from a pair of four-cylinder petrol engines: the BMW X3 xDrive 25L Luxury, and the more dynamic BMW X3 xDrive 30L.
The BMW X3 xDrive 25L Luxury develops 140 kW (190 hp) power and maximum torque of 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) with capacity to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.7 seconds reaching a top speed of 214 km/h (133 mph).
The BMW X3 xDrive 30L generates 190 kW (258 hp) and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). It can speed from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 239 km/h (148 mph).
Customized features for China
The design of these variants brings a number of customized features to the Chinese market.
They feature more space and extended wheelbase, which makes them the first to have such feature while maintaining the top balance and handling that BMW is known for.
Other features such as the new BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 9 also offer customers in China a large number of exclusive digital services.
The vehicles will be built locally at Plant Lydia, which BMW operates through its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA).
