T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom has announced plans to launch an AI phone later this year.
In a press release on 3 March, the company said that it is moving from its AI vision to actually launching an AI phone that doesn’t require apps to operate as conventional phones do today.
Leading in AI
Deutsche Telekom first presented the concept of an AI Phone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2024, and is now heading to production of the phone powered by Perplexity.
The phone will carry out many functions for users, including ordering a taxi, reserving a table, translating in real time, and answering all questions among several other functions.
In addition to Perplexity, it will also have features such as Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart as well as “Magenta AI” in the MeinMagenta app.
Jon Abrahamson, Chief Product & Digital Officer at Deutsche Telekom said:
“We foresee a role for Deutsche Telekom in democratizing access to the best of Generative AI technology for our customers. This is our core vision for ‘Magenta AI. Magenta AI’ stands for amazing, useful, secure AI services. Once used, you will never give it back.”
The digital assistant can be accessed directly from the lock screen or by double-tapping the power button, and will work intuitively by voice, the company said.
With Perplexity being the main feature of the phone, it can also process language, text and images, create calendar entries, write emails, make summaries and translate content.
AI taking over
After only a few years of coming to the limelight, artificial intelligence is taking over almost every sector of human endeavour.
The technology has been applied in building robots to help with household chores, in medicine, in engineering, and now in mobile phones. It is likely that much more is yet to be discovered for the application of the technology.
