Amazon plans to launch UK’s first drone delivery service in Darlington, through its Prime Air program to deliver packages in as little as 15 minutes.
According to Amazon’s 27 January official post, it will look for planning permission to modify its Darlington fulfilment centre, incorporating flight operation facilities.
Furthermore, the company has said it will apply for approval from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate drones in the region. However, the exact start date for the trial has not been specified.
A long-awaited milestone
Amazon chose Darlington with its population of almost 100,000 after considering factors like local weather patterns, airspace requirements, and its current warehouse operations.
This move marks a huge milestone for the company, which initially tested drone flights in Cambridgeshire almost ten years ago.
The program encountered several setbacks and was later relocated to the United States. Now, with the UK trial, Amazon is taking the next step in making drone delivery a reality in the UK.
Since launching in 2022 in the U.S., Amazon has delivered thousands of packages to clients in 60 minutes or less using its fleet of electric drones, showing a proven track record in drone delivery.
However, Amazon recently suspended its MK30 drone flights in Arizona and Texas after two crashes in light rain.
Since then, the company has implemented software updates to boost the drones’ performance in wet weather, saying the crashes were not the main reason for these upgrades.
Amazon has worked closely with authorities and communities globally to guarantee the safety and reliability of its drone delivery services, and it aims to achieve the same in the UK.
Creating more jobs
In order to meet the required manpower needed for the drone deliveries, Amazon plans to hire more staff to support the project after securing the essential permissions and licenses.
Customers will have a chance to opt into drone delivery, while traditional delivery methods will still be available for those who prefer them.
Once the service is live, Darlington customers can order items directly through the Amazon app or website, ensuring a smooth and efficient delivery experience.
